The Runner
A quick trip to the store was a good reason to get out of the house. It was still early and most of the house was just watching TV and being lazy. Dressed in casual pants and a tank top, I slipped out the door and drove away.
I was just in time.
It was a bit stalkerish, but he did mention the time that he goes running, and where he runs, I didn’t go looking. Last week he was passing this intersection at 9:18AM. It was coincidental last time that I saw him as I drove by. We’ve lived a few blocks away from each other for years, but I didn’t know this until he told me over drinks that night. The crowd of friends around made it hard for us to talk much, but I found myself looking across the room at him a few times, catching him looking at me.
He runs right by my house, three times a week and on Saturday morning. He didn’t see me last Saturday- I was just driving by and I recognized the orange baseball cap that he’s talked about on Facebook so many times. His running cap, his lucky cap. I got the idea then. I wasn’t sure it would work- but maybe. I pulled into the parking lot just as I saw him running towards the shopping center. He would be crossing the driveway in about 2 minutes. I pulled into the south side and drove between the cars- slowly, watching his pace and trying to time it right, the car ahead of me pulled to the right and nobody was behind me. Slowly, I pulled towards the street. He was approaching- looking ahead, watching the car that was getting ready to pull into the street. My car. He didn’t notice me yet but he was slowing. I stopped, he was 5 feet away from my door. Jogging in place, looking ahead. Waiting for the car to move. Waiting for me to make my move.
“Hi,” I said to him, somewhat loudly. He looked at me, taking a moment to recognize me. He smiled. He stopped running and took off his glasses and wiped his eyes.
“What are you doing here?” he said approaching my window. He leaned in and kissed my cheek, “Shopping?”
I took a deep breath. It was my moment- what I came here for. My heart was beating as if I had been the one running and I feared what he might say. Would he think I was nuts? I admit, it was kind of stalkerish. OK- REALLY stalkerish. There was a good chance he’d be freaked out by me. We hadn’t talked much, he doesn’t know me.
Just do it. Say it.
“I came here for you.” I looked him dead in the face, confident. Ok, maybe I was biting my lip, sure , and twirling my hair.
He leaned back into the window and spoke low, almost a whisper into my ear, “Really now? What did you have in mind?”
His face was just inches away from mine, I could feel his breath on my cheek. He could see straight down my low cut top. I was breathing heavy. “I… I’m not sure. I didn’t plan much past this part. Get in. Lets find out.”
Climbing into the passenger seat I pulled out onto the street. Where was I going? I realize that I hadn’t really thought this through. I knew I just wanted to be alone with him some more. I laughed to myself, and then a little louder. Was I crazy??
“What’s so funny?” he said. He knew I was nervous but he seemed really comfortable. He wasn’t shocked at all by my behavior. It was as if this was perfectly normal, something that happened to him every day. I didn’t answer, just drove to a park a few blocks away. I choose a parking spot on the far end, not exactly hidden, but certainly not in plain sight either. I turned off the engine and turned to face him.
Good lord, what now?
